We live with intention. One's desires serve as fuel to formulate one's intentions. Attention to intention is concentration. Prolonging one's attention to one's intention is either Study or Meditation. Broadly speaking, "study" relates to intentions pertaining to worldly subjects; "meditation" relates to intentions pertaining to Cosmic/Spiritual subjects.
Side Benefits of Meditation
Roy Eugene Davies (student of Pramadhansa Yoganada) gives the following reasons for meditations, and I concur.
While the primary purpose of meditation is to facilitate awakened spiritual awareness-consciousness, the side benefits are:
Sitting - Lotus, Hero, Pharaoh postures; select one.
The ideal meditation posture needs to be comfortable and pleasant for the meditation practitioner. Sit upright, with attention gently flowing towards the area between the eye brows (the spiritual eye center). This will begin the inward turning process. Be content. Accept the fact that, for the duration of the practice, there is nothing more important than what you are doing presently.
If you are a new to meditation, plan to sit for at least 20 minutes, to allow time for you to experience deep relaxation, settling of emotions and thoughts, and rest in the tranquil silence. Select a comfortable area that you can return daily, preferably at the same time(s) to cultivate this discipline. At the beginning you may have "monkey mind" (your awareness drifting into your memories, your intentions, and formulating new intentions) and "physical restlessness" (usually stemming from muscles getting tired from the posture for meditation); you have to stay for 20 minutes regardless. Eventually you (awareness; Present I Am) will have lesser & lesser distractions and feel more physically settled and intellectually/mentally focus.
How you start your practice will be determined by your psychological disposition and your knowledge of the meditation process. You may begin with prayers, to awaken to a sense of attuning with God/Creator. However God is real to you, whether as an Omnipresent Being, Universal Intelligence, or a Benevolent Being, pray to God. Praying to God, is your private acceptance that there is Creator that has gifted/created the Individualized Intelligence that your are. With awakened spiritual "awareness-consciousness integration", this initiates deeper understanding of and your relationship with God will be "personally yours with certainty".
Once you have progressed in your meditation, after arriving and resting in the tranquil silence, proceed to more intentional contemplation or visualization. Short meditation periods of 20-30 minutes are ideal for inner refreshment and centering. Longer meditation provides opportunities for more profound exploration of refined states of "awareness-consciousness integration" and for the progressive unfolding of spiritual qualities and insightful perceptions.
At the conclusion of your of your meditation practice, you may remain seated for a few minutes for the purpose of doing some intentional inner work; letting "Super Awareness" to blend more obviously with your "Present Awareness" in human physicality. Or, you may return to your normal activities.
Affirmations are you, the Intelligence that you are, declaring its intentions to be fulfilled by itself and by its physical self. When one says affirmations aloud and listens, the body cells will accept such "affirmed intentions" to be followed and fulfilled. (This is supported by such observations by Dr. Masaru Emoto, in his scientific work, documented on "messages from water". When we have positive affirmations, the water molecules in our body cells will response with beautiful structuring to keep the body healthy and alert.)
Affirmation starts with "I Am". "I Am" is the awareness of your Intelligence, and it is the authority of your Intelligence, where decisions are made.

I Am Strong

I Am Wealthy, Abundance

I Am the Awareness of Intelligence. ( Awareness is Present I Am; Discerning Authority of Intelligence.)
I Am Wisdom of Intelligence. (Wisdom is discerning correctly and properly for choices in Life.)
In the tranquility of the Deep-Deep Silence (Void) make the assertions;
I Am Awareness deepening into my Consciousness
I Am Awareness receiving proper guidance information from Cosmic Consciousness
I Am Awareness deepening into the VOID/Infinite Intelligence as my path of Ascension back into the Very Intelligence that has gifted/created my Individualized Intelligence.
Affirmation for Peace
(Say affirmations aloud and listen to your own voice; if you missed, your awareness has wandered. You want 100% concentration. Repeat as many times as you wish.)
Definitions: The most important is to have Purity of Intentions in Thoughts and Deeds. Purity is "internalized essential harmlessness to oneself and to others". Purity is an internalized discipline/character of the Individualized Intelligence. Love is "externalized expression of Purity towards others". Peace is "Non-excitable disposition and or acceptance of events with understanding compassion."
Say aloud the following affirmations and when & where practical, listen to your own voice;
I Am Peace with Purity.
I Am Peace in difficulties.
I Am Peace in sadness and grief.
I Am Peace in confinement.
I Am Peace in being judged, discriminated.
I Am Peace with compassion.
I Am Peace in friendship.
I Am Peace in harmony.
I Am peace in freedom.
I Am Peace in happiness.
I Am Peace in loneliness.
I Am Peace when transitioning from Physicality to Spirituality.
I Am Peace when deepening into "Creator Intelligence".
I Am Peace in VOID.
(VOID is the Conjoint Undifferentiated Infinite Intelligence and Existence from which all Differentiated Intelligence and Existence are derived from, and exist within. Nothing can exist beyond VOID/GOD. Our Universe is a "Time-Space Continuum" a fabrication of "VOID-INTELLIGENCE" and placed with "VOID-EXISTENCE". There are many Universes within VOID.)
A Meditation into Personal Peace
(Say aloud and listen to your own voice. Later as you have advanced, you can say quietly to yourself.)
Be still and know I Am Peace (x 3)

Peace embraced by the Love, Wisdom and Power of VOID (x 3).
(Now, gently recess into the the tranquility of the Deep-Deep Silence; entering into VOID.
Know and feel the Peace of the Deep-Deep Silence.
Gently bring the Peace of the Deep-Deep Silence ,
Into your Intelligence (Awareness & Consciousness)
Into your Physicality (current existential form, human being)
Then sit/rest in Tranquility, in Silence and Awareness, within the Presence of VOID.
Receive whatever information (via thoughts and feelings) and experiences (sometimes physical) with gratitude.
Do not get excited by such information and experience; stay in Peace mode; observe and learn.)
